- Abstract
- This datalayer is a point coverage for Massachusetts locations for properties listed on the Massachusetts State Register of Historic Places. This layer was derived from the Massachusetts Electronic Atlas database published by the Harvard Map Collection in 2001. For more information on this layer please read the "Supplemental Information" section which follows. The Massachusetts Electronic Atlas (MEA) was a collaborative project to provides access, via the Internet, to data about the Commonwealth, its thirteen regional planning agency districts and 351 cities and towns. This dataset is now only available via The Harvard Geospatial Library.
- Purpose
- This layer is intended for researchers, students, and policy makers for reference and mapping purposes, and may be used for basic applications such as viewing, querying, and map output production. This layer will provide a basemap for layers related to socio-political anaylsis, statistical enumeration and analysis, or to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data. More advanced user applications may focus on demographics, urban and rural land use planning, socio-economic analysis and related areas including defining boundaries, managing assets and facilities, integrating attribute databases with geographic features, spatial analysis, and presentation output. This layer also provided documentation of locations for use in state historic preservation office GIS.
- Supplemental Information
- The State Register of Historic Places (SRHP) datalayer consists of points representing locations of significant historic properties and sites with legal designations under several specific local, state and federal statutes The SRHP was established by MGL ch. 9 ss. 26-27c as amended by Chapter 152 of the Acts of 1982 and Chapter 254 of the Acts of 1985, and is maintained by the Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) in the Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth. Historic resources in the SRHP include buildings, structures, objects, sites, landscapes and districts. Locational information on archaeological sites in the SRHP is not a public record, and therefore archaeological sites are not included in the current datalayer. This data was originally developed by the Massachusetts Historical Commission. Questions about the date or planned updates should contact the Commission at: Massachusetts Historical Commission 220 Morrissey Boulevard Boston, MA 02125 USA (617) 727-8470 (voice) (617) 727-5128 (FAX) Hours of Service: Monday through Friday, 8:45 am to 5:00 pm

- Credit
- The Massachusetts Electronic Atlas dataset was a joint project of Douglas Carnahan, formerly of the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC), Richard Gelpke of the Earth and Geographic Sciences Department of the University of Massachusetts at Boston, and David Cobb, Bonnie Burns, Martin von Wyss, and Arlene Olivero of the Harvard Map Collection. Valuable technical assistance and support has been provided by Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), Peter Girard of ESRI, and the Harvard College Library. From the MassGIS Website documentation on this layer: "All maps displaying these layers must include the following disclaimer: "Historic Districts - Massachusetts Historical Commission: This is a beta version and does not reflect listings past 1997. Users should consult the most recent State Register of Historic Places (available at the State House Bookstore) for updates. Listings are regularly updated in the weekly State Register."

- Data Quality Information
- Attribute Accuracy Report
- Topological Properties The attribute accuracy of these files is as precise as the source used during the creation or update of the Massachusetts Electronic Atlas (MEA) database. No specific field tests for attribute accuracy have been conducted on the files.
- Completeness Report
- Data completeness of the Massachusetts Electronic Atlas (MEA) files reflects the contents of the database at the time the files were created. Data for a given category contain attribute codes that reflect the information portrayed on the original source. Historic resources in the SRHP include buildings, structures, objects, sites, landscapes and districts. Locational information on archaeological sites in the SRHP is not a public record, and therefore archaeological sites are not included in the current datalayers. This ilayer does not reflect listings entered since 1997. Users should consult the most recent State Register of Historic Places (available at the State House Bookstore) for updates. Listings are regularly updated in the weekly State Register.
- Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report
- The Massachusetts Electronic Atlas' (MEA) mission to profile the Commonwealth's people and institutions did not require the highest level of positional accuracy. Coordinates in these files are in decimal degrees and have six implied decimal places. The six-decimal place precision is useful when producing maps as it allows you to place features that are next to each other on the ground in the correct position, relative to each other, on the map without overlap.
