- Abstract
- United States Rail Nodes is a point theme representing nodes in the United States railway system at a 1:100,000 scale. The data set covers all 50 States plus the District of Columbia.
- Purpose
- The data set provides location and partial attribute information for use in national and regional network analysis applications.
- Supplemental Information
- At the time of publishing the CD significant updates to the layer were underway. Please check http://gis.fra.dot.gov for the latest version of the dataset

- The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) develops and maintains the rail network geospatial data layer. The Research and Innovative Technology Administration's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (RITA/BTS) compiled and formatted the data for release on the National Transportation Atlas Databases (NTAD) 2008.

- Attribute Accuracy Report
- The previous 2 million network attributes were conflated to the 100k network. The FRA reports the following fields as incomplete: Signal System, Number of Tracks, and Subdivision. The FRA reports that as many nodes as possible have been identified with a name. Many nodes in the 1:100,000 scale rail network are 'mapped' to a node in the 1:2,000,000 scale rail network. Special note concerning trackage rights: In some cases, a 'short line' railroad may operate on its larger railroad connection(s) as its billing railroad. For example, the larger railroad(s) treat traffic originating or terminating on the short line as if it were originating or terminating on its own line; perform the billing, car reporting, and car tracking; then share the revenue with the short line. These trackage rights may exist as four, five, or six in the sequence, while one and two remain empty. BTS quality checks were to cross reference the place dataset with the state dataset, to determine that the spatial data and attribute data were accurate
- Logical Consistency Report
- The network is topologically connected and the data set is geographically accurate at the 1:100,000 scale.
- Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report
- The horizontal accuracy for these data can be stated as being that associated with data compiled at the 1:100,000 scale.
