- Abstract
- Polygon coverage of administrative boundaries of China which includes region codes, national and international boundaries and divisions, islands and ocean areas.
- Purpose
- These data are intended for researchers, students, and policy makers for reference and mapping purposes, and to provide users with geographic data for cartography, socio-political and economic analysis and other types of geographic analysis. Data can be used with geographic information systems (GIS) software to display and analyze political and administrative regions in China, or to provide a basemap to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data.

- Attribute Accuracy Report
- The names of populated places, mountains and streams in the DMDC are represented by both Chinese characters and Pinyin. Generally the NAME item is used to store Chinese characters and the PYNAME item stores the Pinyin in the attribute tables. The features of administrative areas, culture, hydrography, hypsography, land cover and ocean have annotations in the DMDC which can be represented by both Chinese characters and Pinyin. These are annotated as 'CH' and 'PY' respectively.NOTE: Chinese characters may not display properly on machines without the proper character sets installed. Encoding of the Chinese characters is GBK Simplified..
- Logical Consistency Report
- Coincident Features: There are coincident features in the DMDC datalayers. For example, streams and coastlines coincide with boundaries. Minimum Areal Features: When the area of a polygon is less than 1.5 square millimeters on the 1:1,000,000-scale map, it is represented as a point feature and its code remains the same.
- Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report
- Line Connectivity and Polygon Closure: Some linear and polygonal features that do not contain the necessary connectivity in the original 1:1,000,000-scale map are connected in the DMDC. For example, roads are connected in DMDC when they are split by symbols or place names on the map, and double-line streams are closed in DMDC where they meet the ocean. Edgematching: Generally features along tile edges have been matched. However, in some cases no edgematching was attempted because the original 1:1,000,000-scale maps were compiled in different periods and severe feature offsets do occur. For example, this offset can be found in some vegetation features and 100-meter supplementary contours.

- Each map sheet covers six degrees longitude by four degrees latitude. The 1:1,000,000-scale map series is the smallest National Essential Topographic Map Series in China, which comprehensively depicts the natural, social and economic situation in China and forms a relevant geographic base for many uses.
