Abstract
This point layer contains locations of six types of historical markers throughout Cambridge, including blue oval historic markers, African American Heritage Trail markers, North Cambridge historic markers, granite tombstone markers, cast-iron markers, and Cambridge History Stations. The markers commemorate significant sites, events, buildings, and prominent figures in Cambridge history.
Purpose
Created for general use within the Cambridge Historical Commission and for map production.
Supplemental Information
Properties marked with blue oval historic markers are not necessarily protected by any design review or other regulation by the Historical Commission. The sites were chosen not for the architectural significance of the existing structures, but for the sites? relationship to important events or persons. The blue oval marker program began in 1976, and today there are nearly one hundred markers throughout the city.
