- Abstract
- These are digital boundaries for the system of counties essentially created by the 1889 Local Government Act and continuing to exist until 1974. Their initial primary focus was the administration of education. During the twentieth century, they can be treated as aggregates of local government districts, although note that administratively County Boroughs were independent of the counties they were geographically part of. This file represents the system as it was used to report the 1911 Census of Population, and does not separately identify County Boroughs.
- Purpose
- The mission of the Great Britain Historical GIS Project is to provide a systematic spatial framework for historical information about Britain.

- Access Restrictions
- To promote awareness of our work and to provide a public benefit, the University of Portsmouth and the Great Britain Historical GIS makes these county boundaries, but not other more detailed boundaries, available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0): https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/. This does not mean they are in the public domain: (1) You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests that the University of Portsmouth or the Great Britain Historical GIS endorses you or your use. (2) The share-alike requirement means that anything you publish using these boundaries must also be under a CC BY-SA license. In particular, if you use these boundaries to map your attribute data, you must make the attribute data available under that license. For unrestricted commercial licensing, contact gbhgis@port.ac.uk.
- Use Restrictions
- Copies of the boundary data may not be passed on to other users; each user must obtain their own copy of the data from the University of Portsmouth or from a data library authorised to distribute, who are required to maintain a record of users to whom the data have been supplied. Data may be used to create paper maps, non-georeferenced raster images or PDF files, provided they include a copyright notice and acknowledgment. Geo-referenced vector data in any format may not be disseminated by any method, including online downloads or data feeds. For full details see copyright license included with authorised copies of the data.

- G_UNIT
- This value is a unique identifier from our gazetteer. The g_unit value can be used to identify the same unit in different years even if the name/boundary/status of the unit has changed.

- G_NAME
- Name of unit at this date

- NAMESTATUS
- Status of name: P = Preferred or O = Official Equates to "G_NAME_STATUS" in gazetteer. As far as possible all unit names are the Preferred English name at the date given in the file name. Where this was unavailable they have been assigned their Preferred Welsh name in that year. Where the name status is given as 'O' this indicates it was the preferred official name at this particular date, although another name later replaced it as the preferred name.
