- Abstract
- The points represent the capitals of governmental districts in the larger German territorial states. In many cases, the name of the capital was used as the name of the district as well. The polygons of Germany in 1834 are available in a separate data sets on this server.
- Purpose
- This data set is a contribution to the territorial and administrative history of Germany and of her position within Central Europe. In addition, it lends itself to the application of spatial statistics at the the level of the individual district.
- Supplemental Information
- All geographic names in the G-HGIS dataset are given in German language, even if some of the populated places shown in historical settings are today located in other countries like Poland, Belgium or Denmark. A multi-language concordance list - including standard English terminology - is contained in the electronic compendium of the HGIS Germany website (http://www.hgisg-ekompendium.ieg-mainz.de/Sprachkonkordanzen/).

- The historical GIS of Germany traces the political and adminstrative history of the German states from 1820 to 1914. Three layers of political-administrative units - state, province, districts - are contained in the data sets, which record all visible boundary changes at these levels per year. In addition to polygons, line information like external boundaries, and point information like capitals of states, provinces, and districts are given. The project's website is www.hgis-germany.de, from where downloads of vector data are not possible, however.
