- Abstract
- This datalayer is a point coverage representing mine and mineral resource occurrence data worldwide (most thoroughly within the U.S.) and was published as part of the USGS Global GIS : global coverage database. It was derived from the MAS/MILS (Minerals Availability System/Mineral Industry Location System) mineral location database. This database was transferred to the U.S. Geological Survey from the U.S. Bureau of Mines upon its closure in 1996. The USGS Global GIS database contains a wealth of USGS and other public domain data, including global coverages of elevation, landcover, seismicity, and resources of minerals and energy at a nominal scale of 1:1 million. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and The American Geological Institute (AGI) announced a cooperative agreement that will focus on making the USGS Global Geographic Information System (GIS) database readily available to educators and the general public in the form of a DVD based world atlas.
- Purpose
- This data is a general purpose global mines and mineral resources datalayer designed to support Geographic Information Systems applications. This layer is intended for researchers, students, and policy makers for reference and mapping purposes, and may be used for basic applications such as viewing, querying, and map output production. This layer will provide a basemap for layers related to socio-economic and political anaylsis, statistical enumeration and analysis, or to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data. More advanced user applications may focus on demographics, urban and rural land use planning and related areas including defining boundaries, managing assets and facilities, integrating attribute databases with geographic features, spatial analysis, and presentation output.

- RBC
- River Basin Code is defined in the U.S. Geological Survey Office of Water Data Coordination publication, Catalog of Information on Water Data-Maps Showing Location of Water Quality Stations. These maps show major drainage area boundaries coded from 1 through 97; each of these major drainage areas is further subdived into minor areas which are assigned letter codes. - HUC
- Hydrologic Unit Code is an 8-character replacement for the RBC, currently being used by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey. This code more precisely pinpoints the water drainage area and it is recommended that it be used as an addition to the data provided by the River Basin Code. The code for a particular deposit can be obtained from a Hydrologic Unit Map for a given state. These maps have been published by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey and are availabe from the district office responsible for the state(s) concerned. (Adapted from Seaber, P.R., Kapinos, F.P., and Knapp, G.L., 1987, Hydrologic Unit Maps: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Supply Paper 2294, 63 p.USGS)
