- Abstract
- The USGS Central Region Energy Team assessed the oil and gas resources of the United States. Cell maps for each oil and gas production area were created by the USGS as a method for illustrating the degree of exploration, type of production, and distribution of production in a play. Each cell represents a one-mile square of the land surface, and the cells are coded to represent whether the wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, or dry. The well information was initially retrieved from the Petroleum Information Well History Control System (WHCS), which is a proprietary, commercial database containing information for most oil and gas wells in the U.S. Cells were developed as a graphic solution to overcome the problem of displaying proprietary WHCS data. No proprietary data are displayed or included in the cell maps. The data used to generate the cells are from WHCS and are current as of December, 1990. This version of the dataset was published as part of the USGS Global GIS : global coverage database (2003). The USGS Global GIS database contains a wealth of USGS and other public domain data, including global coverages of elevation, landcover, seismicity, and resources of minerals and energy at a nominal scale of 1:1 million. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and The American Geological Institute (AGI) announced a cooperative agreement that will focus on making the USGS Global Geographic Information System (GIS) database readily available to educators and the general public in the form of a DVD based world atlas.
- Purpose
- The purpose of the cell map is to display the exploration maturity, type of production, and distribution of production in one-mile cells for each of the oil and gas plays defined in the 1995 U.S. National Oil and Gas Assessment. This layer is intended for researchers, students, and policy makers for reference and mapping purposes, and may be used for basic applications such as viewing, querying, and map output production. This layer will provide a basemap for layers related to socio-economic and political anaylsis, statistical enumeration and analysis, or to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data. More advanced user applications may focus on demographics, urban and rural land use planning and related areas including defining boundaries, managing assets and facilities, integrating attribute databases with geographic features, spatial analysis, and presentation output.

- Data Quality Information
- Attribute Accuracy Report
- The accuracy of the cells, as created by the FORTRAN program of D.H. Root and R.F. Mast, depends on the accuracy of the oil and gas well information in the version of the Petroleum Information System (PI) Well History Control System (WHCS) database. For the national scale of the 1995 Oil and Gas Assessment, the assumption was made that the data in WHCS were of sufficient accuracy for such a national-scale analysis.
- Logical Consistency Report
- A sampling of cell locations and cell attributes were visually compared to a hard-copy plot of wells to identify errors.
- Completeness Report
- The cells were defined using the well data in the Petroleum Information System (PI) Well History Control System (WHCS) database. The WHCS database contains over two million wells for the U.S., which, although not a complete tabulation of all U.S. wells, is the most complete well database available for the United States.
- Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report
- A visual comparison was made using a sampling of cell locations and cell attributes with well locations and attributes. In particular, the values of latitude and longitude for the wells in WHCS were assumed to be accurate.

- Completion year. Two spaces, integer value. These values are calculated by decade. If more than one well was contained within the cell, the value was assigned from the earliest completed well within the cell (e.g., code 98 means that the earliest well in the cell was completed in the 1980's). A code of 81 (1810) indicates no data. (Two spaces, integer value.)
