- Abstract
- This layer is a georeferenced raster image of a map plate of a section of Dorchester, Massachusetts from the Bromley Co. atlas entitled: Atlas of the City of Boston : from actual surveys and official records, by Geo. W. Walter S. Bromley. Vol. 7 Brighton, Mass., published 1890. This image is of Plate 28 : Part of Brighton, Ward 25, city of Boston. Scale 1:1,200. The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the surface of the earth and fit to the Massachusetts State Plane Coordinate System, Mainland Zone (in Feet) (Fipszone 2001). All map collar and inset information is also available as part of the raster image, including any inset maps, profiles, statistical tables, directories, text, illustrations, index maps, legends, or other information associated with the principal map. These large scale fire insurance maps typically include: building footprints, building construction material (frame, brick, stone), building assessors areas, selected owner names, selected building functions, property boundaries, building street addresses, street names, railroads, fire hydrants, water main pipelines (with size in inches), sewers, and more. Building construction material is shown by colored shading. The index plate of the atlas includes an explanation of map features. This layer is part of a selection of digitally scanned and georeferenced historic fire insurance and land ownership atlases of Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts from the Harvard Map Collection. The selection of scanned atlases represents a range of originators and ground condition dates (1873-1916).
- Purpose
- Fire insurance and land ownership atlases published in the 19th and early 20th centuries are one of the most valuable sources for monitoring and viewing urban change. As this map has been georeferenced, it can be used in a GIS as a source or background layer in conjunction with other GIS data.

- Data Quality Information
- Attribute Accuracy Report
- The georeferenced raster is a faithfully reproduced digital image of the original source map. Some differences may be detected between the source graphic used and the raster image due to the RGB values assigned that particular color. The intent is to recreate those colors as near as possible.
- Completeness Report
- Data completeness for raster digital image files reflect content of the source graphic. Features may have been eliminated or generalized on the source graphic due to scale and legibility constraints
- Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report
- The horizontal positional accuracy of a raster image is approximately the same as the accuracy of the published source map. The lack of a greater accuracy is largely the result of the inaccuracies with the original measurements and possible distortions in the original paper map document. There may also be errors introduced during the digitizing (e.g. the gutter fold of the atlas may not be perfectly flat during the imaging process) and georeferencing process. In most cases, however, errors in the raster image are small compared with sources of error in the original map graphic. The RMS error for this map is 7.64815 feet. This value describes how consistent the transformation is between the different control points (links). The RMS error is only an assessment of the accuracy of the transformation.

- Entity and Attribute Information
- Entity and Attribute Overview
- The indexes reference a color palette of RGB values from 0 through 255, representing the color value from the original paper sheet map. The colors on that sheet represent building footprints and features, property boundaries, transportation features (roads, railroads, tracks and trails), drainage, map annotations, and more. The colors and symbols are explained in a key on the index page of the source atlas. A citation and URL to a digital version of the source atlas including the index page with key is provided in the cross reference section. See: http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:FHCL:3444551 The digital version of the atlas also includes a graphic and street index.
