- Abstract
- This layer is a digital raster graphic of the 7.5 x 15 Minute USGS topographic map of the Townsend, Massachusetts quadrangle, 1988. Scale 1:25,000. The DRG was published in 1996. A digital raster graphic (DRG) is a scanned image of a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) standard series topographic map, including all map collar information. The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the surface of the earth and fit to the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection. The horizontal positional accuracy and datum of the DRG matches the accuracy and datum of the source map. The source paper map was produced by the United States Geological Survey. It was compiled by photogrammetric methods from aerial photographs taken 1980-1981. Field checked 1983. Map edited 1988. The names of quadrangles which border this one appear in a table on the map collar in their respective positions (N,S,E,W) in relation to this map.
- Purpose
- A DRG is useful as a source or background layer in a GIS, as a means to perform quality assurance on other digital products, and as a source for the collection and revision of DLG data. DRG's can also be merged with other digital data, e.g. DEM's or DOQ's, to produce a hybrid digital file. One of the most widely used of all maps is the topographic map. The feature that most distinguishes topographic maps from maps of other types is the use of contour lines to portray the shape and elevation of the land. Topographic maps render the three-dimensional ups and downs of the terrain on a two-dimensional surface. Topographic maps usually portray both natural and manmade features. They show and name works of nature including mountains, valleys, plains, lakes, rivers, and vegetation. They also identify the principal works of humans, such as roads, boundaries, transmission lines, and major buildings. The wide range of information provided by topographic maps make them extremely useful to professional and recreational map users alike. Topographic maps are used for engineering, energy exploration, natural resource conservation, environmental management, public works design, commercial and residential planning, urban planning and design, and outdoor activities like hiking, camping, and fishing. These maps can provide an excellent view of the changes that have occurred in the cultural and physical landscape. As this map has been georeferenced, it may serve as a useful basemap in conjunction with other GIS vector data.
- Supplemental Information
- This layer is part of a series of digital raster graphics (DRG) of USGS topographic map quadrangles covering the entire state of Massachusetts acquired by The Harvard Map Collection. These DRG layers have been processed and made available online through the Harvard Geospatial Library. Massachusetts DRG series available through the Harvard Geospatial Library include: 7.5- by 7.5-minute, 7.5- by 15-minute, and 1- by 2-degree quadrangles. Scales of these maps range from 1:24,000 to 1:250,000. The Harvard Geospatial Library also has made available a set of the 1:62,500-scale, 15-minute USGS topographic quadrangle maps covering the state of Massachusetts produced between the early 1880s to the mid-1960s.

- Data Quality Information
- Attribute Accuracy Report
- The DRG is an 8-bit color image that employs a color palette to ensure uniform colors throughout a particular DRG series. All DRG's within a series must have the same RGB value.
- Logical Consistency Report
- Not Applicable.
- Completeness Report
- The DRG is a faithfully reproduced digital image of the original source map. Some differences may be detected between the source graphic used and the DRG due to the RGB values assigned that particular color. The intent is to recreate those colors as near as possible. Data completeness for DRG files reflect content of the source graphic. Features may have been eliminated or generalized on the source graphic due to scale and legibility constraints. For information on collection and inclusion criteria, see U.S. Geological Survey, 1994, Standards for 1:24,000-Scale Digital Line Graphs and Quadrangle Maps: National Mapping Program Technical Instructions and U.S. Geological Survey, 1994, Standards for Digital Line Graphs: National Mapping Program Technical Instructions.
- Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report
- While the datum of the published map is retained to be consistent with other USGS digital data, this image is cast on the UTM and may be INCONSISTENT with the credit note on the image collar.
