Abstract
This layer contains the administrative boundaries and regions for ADM1 shi and do (municipalities and provinces) of North Korea. These boundary data were compiled from a variety of published map sources in Korean, Chinese, and English with various dates of publication, but are all current to 1998. The internal boundary data are fitted to the Digital Chart of the World coastlines and international boundaries (ponet).
Purpose
These data are intended for researchers, students, and policy makers for reference and mapping purposes, and to provide users with geographic data to display and analyze political and administrative regions in North Korea. Data may also be used for cartography, local and regional planning analysis, urban and rural policy-making, environmental monitoring, economic analysis and other types of geographic analysis. Data can be used with geographic information systems (GIS) software to display and analyze information on political, economic and associated areas of interest, or to provide a basemap to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data.
Supplemental Information
Data originally supplied in ARC/INFO 7.2 export format (.e00), and are projected in decimal degrees using the WGS84 Spheroid/Datum. Polygons in this layer are identified with arbitrary but hierarchical codes that distinguish shi (municipalities) from do (provinces) and kun (districts). All ADM1 polygon codes at the shi/do level belonging to shi begin with 0 (01, 02, etc), whereas those for do begin with 1 (11, 12, etc.).
