- Abstract
- Point location coverage for seats of administrative units below the ADM2 level, consisting of shi (cities), up (towns), nodongja-ku (communes), and myun (townships). ADM3 administrative centers are often connected by local roads contained in a separate coverage (Local Roads - North Korea)
- Purpose
- These data are intended for researchers, students, urban and regional planners, and policy makers for reference and mapping purposes, and to provide users with geographic data for cartography, local and regional demographic and planning analysis, urban and rural policy-making, environmental monitoring, management and impact analysis, economic analysis and other types of geographic analysis. These data can be used with geographic information systems (GIS) software to display and analyze information on land use and planning and associated areas of interest, or to provide a basemap, (e.g. for labeling town names on maps), to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data.
- Supplemental Information
- Data originally supplied in ARC/INFO 7.2 export format (.e00), and are projected in decimal degrees using the WGS84 Spheroid/Datum. Points in this coverage are identified with arbitrary codes that employ the ADM2 administrative unit codes as their first four digits, and then use additional digits following a point to indicate their type, as follows: shi (cities - the same Korean term used for municipalities) that are are not ADM2 capitals have numbers that start with .02 and continue with 0 for a first digit (xxyy.02, xxyy.03, etc); places identified as up (towns) have last two digits that begin with 1 (xxyy.11, xxyy.12, etc.) places identified as nodongja-ku (communes) have last two digits that begin with 2 (xxyy.21, xxyy.22, etc). ; and places identified as myun (township) seats have last two digits that begin with 5, 6 or 7 (xxyy.51, ., xxyy.71). Where necessary to allow for more places that there are available numbers in a decade, letters starting with a, b, c, etc., have occasionally been substituted for numbers.
