- Abstract
- This datalayer is polygon shapefile representing the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) for the continental United States as defined by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Office of Coast Survey. It was derived from NOAA polyline datasets representing the EEZ boundary for the East Coast, West Coast, and Gulf of Mexico. The Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1976 established a fishery conservation zone contiguous to the territorial sea of the United States, effective March 1, 1977. The outer boundary of the zone is a line drawn in such a manner that each point on it is 200-nautical miles from the baseline from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured. The EEZ was established by Presidential Proclamation, effective March 10, 1983. For information about other U.S. maritime boundaries, please go to http://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/csdl/mbound.htm.
- Purpose
- This data set was created for use in GIS analyses that require polygonal topology. This layer is intended for researchers, students, and policy makers for reference and mapping purposes, and may be used for basic applications such as viewing, querying, and map output production. This layer will provide a basemap for layers related to socio-economic and political anaylsis, statistical enumeration and analysis, or to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data. More advanced user applications may focus on demographics, urban and rural land use planning and related areas including defining boundaries, managing assets and facilities, integrating attribute databases with geographic features, spatial analysis, and presentation output.

- Attribute Accuracy Report
- The points that were generated from the baseline were created by a computer program which doesn't distinguish between East and West longitude. The longitudes in these files are measured West from Greenwich (even past the 180th meridian) unless specifically stated as "E." This is the convention for precise geodetic computations at the National Ocean Service (NOS) and these coordinates were computed on the North American Datum of 1927.

- This file contains the EEZ for the East Coast, West Coast, and Gulf of Mexico of the Continental US. It does not include information on Alaska, Hawaii or other areas under US jurisdiction.
