- Abstract
- Cross sections for the 50-year flood, for Rio Humuya, Comayagua, Honduras. Water-surface elevations for an estimated 50-year-flood discharge on Rio Humuya at Comayagua were determined using HEC-RAS, a one-dimensional step-backwater computer program. The channel and floodplain cross section geometry used in HEC-RAS were developed from an airborne light detection and ranging (LIDAR) topographic survey of the area. The 50-year-flood discharge for Rio Humuya, 1400 cubic meters per second, was estimated using a regression equation that relates the 50-year-flood discharge to drainage area and mean annual precipitation. The area of inundation and depth of flood coverage was created with the HEC-RAS output and topographic TIN using HEC-geo-RAS software.
- Purpose
- The 50-year flood depth maps provide a basis for land-use planning and for engineering design of structures near or within the floodplain of the Rio Humuya at Comayagua.

- The horizontal accuracy is based on several sources of information: 1) The estimated 50-year flood discharge, which is based on a regression equation that uses drainage area and annual precipitation to estimate discharge is one source of error. The regression equation is based on 34 long-term stream gaging stations in Honduras and has a standard error of prediction of 71.3 percent. 2) The application of the one-dimensional hydraulic model (HEC-RAS) that is based on the assumption of gradually varied, steady flow is another source of error. The river is a natural channel with no known regulation, diversions, or split flows. Inaccuracies due to the model's limiting assumptions and solutions in only one dimesion are likely to be minimal. Errors in applying the model and estimating channel roughness by the hydrologist are difficult to assess, but they have been minimized through the USGS review process for publishing interpretive information. These sources will affect the horizontal accuracy in varying amounts at different locations and channel configurations.
