- Abstract
- This datalayer is a point coverage representing agricultural facilities such as silos, storage bins for feeds or grains and grain elevators. Objects in this layer have FACC (Feature and Attribute Coding Catalogue) Codes of AM020, "Grain Bin/Silo: An enclosed container, used for storing grain or fodder," or AM030, "Grain Elevator: A tall structure, equipped for loading, unloading, processing and storing grain." This layer was derived from the VMAP1 series produced by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), an agency of the United States government. VMAP data set products use the "vector product format" (vpf) utilized first by the US Defense Mapping Agency and later by its successor, the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA, now known as the NGA). "VMap" is derived from "Vector Smart Map" Vector Smart Map (VMAP) Level 1 is a global vector GIS dataset at 1:250,000 scale. This is currently the most detailed global digital dataset freely available and can be downloaded from the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NGA) website, using the GeoSpatial Engine The coverage is not complete - of the 234 zones which make up the dataset, only around 25% are currently (2002) available - others have not yet been completed or are not declassified. They feature a vast number of files organized into libraries. These libraries, or coverages, are geographicially bounded areas, rather than feature-linked coverages. VMAP Layers in the Harvard Geospatial Library are feature-based as we have processed the multiple tiles from the VMAP libraries into a series of seamless coverages (i.e. Aqueduct Lines appear in a single layer, "Aqueduct Lines") which depict a particular feature as it occurs throughout the available geographic coverage areas. Since different geographic areas were mapped by NIMA at different times using various types of feature capture and scanning and digitizing methods and software, multiple map sources of varying dates and multiple processing approaches are represented in each of these HGL layers. We have necessarily generalized the discussion of data source material and process steps in the Data Quality section of this metadata document.
- Purpose
- This layer is intended for researchers, students, and policy makers for reference and mapping purposes, and may be used for basic applications such as viewing, querying, and map output production. This layer will provide a basemap for layers related to socio-economic and political anaylsis, statistical enumeration and analysis, or to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data. More advanced user applications may focus on demographics, urban and rural land use planning and related areas including defining boundaries, managing assets and facilities, integrating attribute databases with geographic features, spatial analysis, and presentation output.

- Completeness Report
- All features in this library have valid attribute codes assigned to them in accordance with this specification (VMapLV1 MILSPEC MIL-V-89033).
- Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report
- Absolute horizontal accuracy: Derived from cartographic source or generalized from centerline data. Actual map scale and class source of error are contained in the Data Quality coverage. Accuracy is expressed as a circular error at 90% probability.

- The primary sources for the VMAP layers were the NIMA (DMA) Joint Operations Graphic (JOG) Charts. The standard DoD medium scale chart, at 1: 250,000 scale, the JOG series displays topographic data such as: relief, drainage, vegetation, populated places, cultural features, coastal hydrography, aeronautical overprint depicting obstructions, aerodromes, special use airspace, navigational aids and related data. Coverage within tiles is not always consistent - data may be incomplete or missing altogether. The geographic extent of the VMap Level 1 product is global and consists of multiple regional databases. VMap Level 1 data from standard DMA source products are derived from the feature content defined in the associated military specification. The Vector Product Format (VPF) is defined by a Department of Defense Military Standard (MIL-STD-2407, July 1993), and represents a new data model for digital vector products to be built, maintained, archived, and distributed by DMA. The VMAP program is designed to provide vector-based geospatial data at medium (level 1) and high (level 2) resolution. Data is separated into 10 thematic layers consistent throughout the VMAP program. Each layer contains thematically consistent data. A reference library is provided with general information to orient the user. All data is topologically structured. Each coverage contains a set of files that describe the features in that thematic layer. Data volume is tiled at nominal one degree (level 1) and 15 minutes (level 2) expanding in size towards the poles. Cross-tile topology is maintained. Prototype data is provided with VPFView software and symbology styles. Data coverages are boundaries, elevation, hydrography, industry, physiography, population, transportation, utilities, and vegetation. The horizontal datum for this VMap product is WGS84. The vertical datum for this VMap product is mean sea level (MSL). Data gaps between a VMap Level 1 library may exist due to absence of data. The unit of measure for VMap is metric.
