- Abstract
- This datalayer is a polyline coverage representing coastlines and international boundaries for every continent including Antarctica at a scale of 1:250,000. Features in this layer have an FACC (Feature and Attribute Coding Catalogue) Codes of BA010, defined as, "Coastline/Shoreline or, the line where a land mass is in contact with a body of water" and ZD003 "Artifact Location. An indicator which identifies incomplete or illogical data at a specific location (node), used for data processing only." The World Vector Shoreline (WVS) dataset was developed by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (formerly the U.S. Defense Mapping Agency - DMA) as a digital data file, at a nominal scale of 1:250,000 and referenced to the World Geodetic System (WGS-84) datum. The WVS is divided into ten ocean basin area files. VMAP data set products use the "vector product format" (vpf) utilized first by the US Defense Mapping Agency and later by its successor, the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA, now known as the NGA). "VMap" is derived from "Vector Smart Map."
- Purpose
- This datalayer may be used as a general basemap ayer to illustrate the coastlines, continents and international boundaries as well as oceaninc islands and may be utilized in any Geographic Information System (GIS). This layer is intended for researchers, students, and policy makers for reference and mapping purposes, and may be used for basic applications such as viewing, querying, and map output production. This layer will provide a basemap for layers related to socio-political anaylsis, statistical enumeration and analysis, or to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data. More advanced user applications may focus on environmental change, demographics, urban and rural land use planning and related areas including defining boundaries, managing assets and facilities, integrating attribute databases with geographic features, spatial analysis, and presentation output.

- Attribute Accuracy Report
- Attributes were labelled by visual identification. Country name, sovereign and island name were identified from various map sources. The Caribbean island area attribute may be incomplete. Feature Attribute Coding information was derived from The DIgital Geographic Information Exchange STandard (DIGEST) Feature Attribute Coding Catalogue (FACC) which has been prepared by and issued under the authority of the Digital Geographic Information Working Group (DGIWG). Not all attributes here have been completely defined by including their enumerated domain values. For example, the USE attribute (Usage) contains over 165 possible values with associated definitions. Please consult the DIGEST FACC website for complete coding data. (http://www.digest.org/html/DIGEST_2-1_Part4_AnnexB.pdf)

- All features in this library have valid attribute codes assigned to them in accordance with this specification (VMapLV1 MILSPEC MIL-V-89033).
- Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report
- Feature specification that 90% of all identifiable shoreline features should be located within 500 metres (i.e. 2mm at 1:250,000) of their true geographic position with respect to the WGS-84 datum.

- The main source material for the WVS was DMA's Digital Landmass Blanking (DLMB) database which was derived primarily from the Joint Operations Graphics and coastal nautical charts produced by DMA. The DLMB data consisted of a land/water flag file on a 3 by 3 arc-second interval geographic grid. This raster database was converted into vector form to create WVS and explains the 3 arc-second stepping interval apparent in the coastline when plotted out at high scale. For areas of the world not covered by the DLMB database, the shoreline was taken from the best available hard copy sources at a preferred scale of 1:250,000 (or up to 1:125,000 where the source data allowed). The DMA WVS datasets were compiled into separate 'coast' format data files for use with the USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program cartographic plotting program MAPGEN during the 1980's. These 'coast' format files were the source to retrieve the WVS datasets and is the result of what is presented here.

- The primary sources for the VMAP layers were the NIMA (DMA) Joint Operations Graphic (JOG) Charts. The standard DoD medium scale chart, at 1:250,000 scale, the JOG series displays topographic data such as: relief, drainage, vegetation, populated places, cultural features, coastal hydrography, aeronautical overprint depicting obstructions, aerodromes, special use airspace, navigational aids and related data. Coverage within tiles is not always consistent - data may be incomplete or missing altogether. The geographic extent of the VMap Level 1 product is global and consists of multiple regional databases. VMap Level 1 data from standard DMA source products are derived from the feature content defined in the associated military specification. The Vector Product Format (VPF) is defined by a Department of Defense Military Standard (MIL-STD-2407, July 1993), and represents a new data model for digital vector products to be built, maintained, archived, and distributed by DMA. The VMAP program is designed to provide vector-based geospatial data at medium (level 1) and high (level 2) resolution. Data is separated into 10 thematic layers consistent throughout the VMAP program. Each layer contains thematically consistent data. A reference library is provided with general information to orient the user. All data is topologically structured. Each coverage contains a set of files that describe the features in that thematic layer. Data volume is tiled at nominal one degree (level 1) and 15 minutes (level 2) expanding in size towards the poles. Cross-tile topology is maintained. Data coverages are boundaries, elevation, hydrography, industry, physiography, population, transportation, utilities, and vegetation. The horizontal datum for this VMap product is WGS84. The vertical datum for this VMap product is mean sea level (MSL). Data gaps between a VMap Level 1 library may exist due to absence of data. The unit of measure for VMap is metric.
