- Supplemental Information
- Air transport is playing an increasing role in global and intercontinental freight, mail, and passenger traffic. It is characterized by high speeds and the ability to overcome natural obstacles. It is one of the most important kinds of passenger transport today, especially for distances greater than 1,000 kilometers. Air transportation leads in continental and intercontinental international passenger traffic. In the 1990s the passenger volume of air transport exceeded 200 billion passenger kilometers. Airports are the key element in the air transport system and transport infrastructure. There are several tens of thousands of airports in the world. Among them, international airports are of great importance.
