Abstract
Manufacturing Centers, 1996 is a point theme representing major manufacturing centers worldwide. Attribute information includes the name of the center, the industrial structure, the size, the relative ecological hazard and the manufacturing industry code.
Purpose
For educational, non-commercial purposes. This dataset is appropriate for use in a GIS.
Supplemental Information
The manufacturing industry is one of the leading sectors of the worlds economy. It is made up of a group of industries that manufacture or process raw materials produced by mining, agriculture, forestry, fishery, and hunting, as well as manufacture semi finished products. The most significant branches of the manufacturing industry are machine building, metalworking, ferrous metallurgy, nonferrous metallurgy, oil processing, chemicals, woodworking, pulp and paper, textiles, clothing, boot and shoe making, food industries, and production of building materials. The manufacturing industry is typically a leading factor in the development of countries, their regions, and large cities, although its role varies in space and time. Distinctions in industrial development among regions are decreasing. Industry plays a relatively greater role in regions that most recently began the process of industrial development. Rapid industrialization of previously backward regions does little to change their relative levels of economic development. The new industry does not produce enough income per capita, which is the principal value of economic development.
