Supplemental Information
The present-day extractive industry is actually a complex of mineral extraction and ore dressing industries. It includes fuel production and extraction of ore, chemical raw materials, and nonmetallic minerals including diamonds, graphite, feldspar, fluorspar, asbestos, mica, dolomite, quartzite, and building materials. Extractive industry is essential for supplying regions and nations with the raw materials and energy necessary for economic development. Its impact is reflected in the distribution patterns of the world economy.
The spatial distribution and production structure of extractive industry are determined by a great number of factors. These factors include geology and geography of mineral beds, their reserves, qualities, accessibility, and natural and climatic conditions. Social and economic conditions are also important. They include internal and external market demands for raw materials, the equipment and technology of mining and processing, infrastructure, and the labor force.
Serious environmental impacts result from many mining activities.
