- Abstract
- World Pipelines, 1996 is a polyline theme representing oil and natural gas pipelines worldwide. Attribute information indicates the type of pipeline.
- Purpose
- For educational, non-commercial purposes. This dataset is appropriate for use in a GIS.
- Supplemental Information
- The existence of pipelines is a decisive factor in the intensive development of the oil and natural gas industries. One reason is that they facilitate the creation of a fuel consumption structure. In many countries, the development of pipelines considerably changes the traffic structure. The presence of pipelines affects the distribution of productive forces and the production and consumption of fuel and power resources. Pipeline networks are being extended due to increasing quantities of transported oil and gas in natural and liquefied forms, as well as the discovery and development of new oil and gas fields. The construction of pipeline networks, both within countries and between regions, groups of countries, and continents, is defined by the distribution of oil, gas, and gas-condensate fields and their processing plants, storage tanks, and consumers. The most significant trends in the development of pipelines are (1) the extension of ocean pipelines including great intercontinental gas pipelines and (2) a shift in the pipeline network to areas with extreme natural and climatic conditions, such as the Arctic and deserts. The development of pipelines is particularly influenced by the knowledge that most gas pipelines transfer environmentally clean fuel to consumers.
