Abstract
Electric Power Plants is a point theme representing electric power plants worldwide. Attribute information includes the name of the location, the amount of power that is produced the type of electricity production and the year operation began.
Purpose
For educational, non-commercial purposes. This dataset is appropriate for use in a GIS.
Supplemental Information
Electric power generation is the leading type of power generation in the world as a whole. Electric power plants are major enterprises and are the most significant elements of electric power generation. They provide the economy with electric power and, in some cases, heating power. Power plants are classified according to the primary sources of energy used for power generation. The present-day power industry is based on thermoelectric, hydroelectric, and nuclear power, and these are the types shown on the maps in this atlas. Thermoelectricity is produced using the energy released by burning mineral and organic fuel. Hydroelectricity is generated by converting the mechanical energy of water flow into electricity by turning an electric generator shaft with hydraulic turbines. Nuclear electricity is produced by converting the heat generated in a nuclear reactor to steam, which turns a turbo-generator shaft. Other types of power plants are located sporadically. They use solar, wind, geothermal, and tidal energy. Power plants in the economically well-developed countries are combined into automatically and centrally controlled electric power systems. They provide electric power for various kinds of consumers.
