Abstract
World Protected Areas (Point), 1996 is a point theme representing protected areas worldwide.
Purpose
For educational, non-commercial purposes. This dataset is appropriate for use in a GIS.
Supplemental Information
The network of protected natural areas around the world is an active measure to protect nature from human and economic impacts. Protected areas include places such as national parks, nature parks, landscape protected areas, national monuments, game reserves, and wildlife sanctuaries. These areas are important for environmental, scientific, cultural, historic, and aesthetic reasons, and they also serve recreational and memorial purposes. Their principal aim is to protect (1) the genetic fund of flora and fauna, (2) representative or rare landscapes, and (3) basic standards of environments. The regimes of protected natural areas are regulated by the environmental legislation of the countries where they are located. The criteria of protected natural areas are developed and regulated by the documents of national environmental institutions and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). All the protected natural areas are classified by the IUCN into the five categories that are defined below. 1. Scientific Reserve/Strict Nature Reserve -- An area possessing some outstanding ecosystems, features, and/or species of flora and fauna of national scientific importance, or that is representative of particular natural areas. 2. National Park -- A relatively large area (1) where one or several ecosystems are not materially altered by human exploitation and occupation, where plant and animal species, geomorphological sites, and habitats are of special scientific, educational, and recreational interest, or that contains a natural landscape of great beauty; (2) where exploitation or occupation is eliminated in the whole area; or (3) where visitors are allowed to enter, under special conditions, for inspirational, educational, cultural, and recreational purposes. 3. Natural Monument/Natural Landmark -- An area that contains one or more specific natural features of outstanding national significance, which should be protected because of uniqueness or rarity. 4. Nature Conservation Reserve/Managed Nature Reserve/Wildlife Sanctuary -- An area designed to protect specific sites or habitats of resident or migratory fauna of national or global significance. 5. Protected Landscape or Seascape -- An area with a special aesthetic quality that is the result of the interaction of man and land or an area that is primarily natural but managed intensively by man for recreation and tourism. In the newly independent countries of the former USSR, a zapovednik is a natural area of environmental, scientific, and educational significance that is specially protected by law as a basic standard of the natural environment, as representative or rare landscapes, and for conservation of the genetic fund of flora and fauna. Such an area is not used for economic purposes and cannot be used for any other purposes. A zakaznik is a natural area designed to protect or reproduce a particular natural resource but where other natural resources can be used with restrictions and controls.
