- Abstract
- World Surface Runoff (polygon), 1996 is a polygon theme representing levels of water surface runoff worldwide.
- Purpose
- For educational, non-commercial purposes. This dataset is appropriate for use in a GIS.
- Supplemental Information
- Surface runoff is the process whereby water from rain, melted snow and ice, and surface drainage flows into channels, depressions, and the world's oceans. Its amount and regime depend on the balance of precipitation and evaporation in river basins, relief, geological structure, soil, and vegetation. Runoff causes erosion, natural drainage and dryness, and the transfer and accumulation of denudation matter. Surface runoff is distinguished from groundwater discharge, which is water that flows within the earth's crust. The volume of water discharged by a particular river constitutes the total runoff of the watershed above that location. Because surface runoff is highly variable in time as well as space, it is recorded over many years. It can be expressed using different indexes. One of the most common indexes, and the one used in this atlas, expresses runoff as a layer of water evenly covering the land. It is calculated using the mean annual runoff in millimeters at an observation point. The maps show watersheds as areas upstream from runoff observation stations. The runoff value for a watershed is assigned to a central point inside it rather than at the observation station. Knowledge of runoff varies for different continents and regions. Reliable observations of runoff are available for as many as 100 to 150 years for Europe, but they average fewer years for the rest of the world. There are more than 60,000 hydrological observation stations around the world at the present time. Their density is highest in Europe and North America.
