World Snow Cover (line), 1996 is a polyline theme representing rates or snowcover worldwide.
Purpose
For educational, non-commercial purposes. This dataset is appropriate for use in a GIS.
Supplemental Information
Snow cover is a sedimentary ice deposit formed from precipitation that is a loose and porous aggregate of crystals and crystal fragments. Snow cover typically accumulates andremains on the earth's surface when air temperatures near the ground are below freezing. The snow covers of the continents are influenced by geographical zones, relief, and atmospheric circulation.
Snow cover is a specific part of the global water exchange cycle that stores water for many months. It is important for vegetation and wildlife, and it greatly affects human life and economic activity.
The maps show the mean annual duration of snow cover. Snow cover duration is the period that begins with the establishment of snow cover and ends when it is completely melted. Snow cover is said to be stable in areas where snow lies for at least one month during more than a half of all winters. It is said to be stable of long duration where snow lies for four or more months each year. Permanent snow cover occurs where snow falls throughout the year and does not melt completely during the summer.
