Abstract
World Volcanoes, 1996 is a point theme representing volcanoes worldwide. Attribute information includes the name, position elevation and type of the volcano.
Purpose
For educational, non-commercial purposes. This dataset is appropriate for use in a GIS.
Supplemental Information
Volcanism is the result of a set of processes related to the movement of magma. Magma is a melted substance composed mainly of silica (or, rarely, alkaline-carbon or sulfide) found in the earth's deep upper mantle, crust, and surface. Volcanoes are the effusion and solidification of magma as lava on the earth's surface. Magma also intrudes into rocks deep in the earth under high temperatures and various chemical conditions. Volcanoes and magma intrusions are evidence of the existence of volcanism. A volcano is a natural geological structure that forms above channels and fissures in the earth's crust. It serves as a way for lava, hot gases, steam, and rock fragments to erupt from magmatic centers. They are made up of a channel where magma and gas enter, a vent where volcanic products such as lava and volcanic rocks are released, a crater, and eruption products. Volcanoes usually form isolated uplands. Volcanoes form in the oceans as well as on land. If an ocean is not deep, volcanic islands may be formed; Hawaii and Ascension islands are examples. Three types of volcanoes are included in the atlas: active, potentially active, and solfatara stage volcanoes. Active volcanoes are those that have had continual or periodic eruptions in the historic period (the past 3,500 years) including volcanoes that evolved solfataras, fumaroles, and mofettes. Active volcanoes are characterized by exact dates of eruption in recent and historic times (the earliest date is 1,500 BC). Potentially active volcanoes are those that have erupted in the past 3,500 years, but dates of eruption are approximated by various direct and indirect methods. Volcanoes in the solfatara stage are those that have not had magmatic eruptions in the historic period, and may be presently emitting sulfurous and other gasses.
