Abstract
Annual Precipitation (polygon), 1996 is a polygon theme representing annual levels of precipitation worldwide. Atmospheric precipitation is water that falls from clouds to the earth's surface including objects on the earth. Precipitation takes many forms, including liquid forms such as droplets, rain, and drizzle, and solid forms such as snow, pellets, and hail. Atmospheric precipitation also includes water that precipitates directly or condenses on the earth's surface or earthbound objects as a result of vapor condensation. These forms of precipitation include dew, hoarfrost, soft rime, and glaze.
Purpose
For educational, non-commercial purposes. This dataset is appropriate for use in a GIS.
Supplemental Information
The parts of the earth with the greatest mean January precipitation are found in the equatorial zone. They include the Sunda Archipelago (600 to 800 mm or more), the Gulf of Guinea coast (more than 400 mm), the Amazon basin (nearly 1,000 mm), the western slope of the northern Andes (in the Cordillera Occidental, 1,000 mm or more), and the northwestern and central Brazilian highlands (nearly 800 mm). The areas with the least mean January precipitation (less than 10 mm) lie in the tropical belts. They include the west coast of South America (south of Punta Parinas), the Mexican highlands, the Gulf of California coast, the Sahel, the Sahara, Namib, and Kalahari deserts, Arabian peninsula, the Caspian depression, the deserts of central Asia, and south and southwest Australia. Low precipitation is also characteristic of the Canadian Arctic archipelago, northern Greenland, Yakutia-Sakha (Russia), and central Antarctica (about 1 mm).
