- Abstract
- United States Designated Market Areas is a polygon theme representing groups of surrounding counties or split counties (by five-digit ZIP) in which metropolitan central area commercial TV stations achieve the largest audience share. DMAs are designed by A.C. Nielsen and define non-overlapping geography for planning, buying, and evaluating television audiences across various U.S. markets.

- Data Quality Information
- Logical Consistency Report
- No duplicate features are present.
- Completeness Report
- After processing, the data set is checked for drawing display and number of records and file sizes compared with source materials. When political boundaries extend into water, the coded boundary line follows the shoreline, creating a visible landmark. Any extensions of political boundaries into water areas are not represented.
- Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report
- The geospatial part of this data set was extracted from the 2000 Census Version TIGER/Line files (CD-ROM edition) then generalized to 1,000 points per polygon and 4,000 points per feature. Generalization was applied only to those polygons requiring it, so the polygons not generalized have the same positional accuracy as the TIGER/Line coordinates and the generalized polygons have less positional accuracy. The positional accuracy of the TIGER/Line coordinates varies with the source materials used but at best meets the established National Map Accuracy standards (+/- 167 feet approximately) where 1:100,000-scale maps from the USGS are the source. The Census Bureau cannot specify the accuracy of feature updates added by its field staff or of features derived from the GBF/DIME-Files or other map sources. Thus, the level of positional accuracy in the TIGER/Line files is not suitable for high-precision measurement applications such as engineering problems, property transfers, or other uses that might require highly accurate measurements of the earth's surface.
