Abstract
United States Census Tracts is a polygon theme representing the U.S. Census tracts of the United States in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Attribute information includes a variety of variables from the 2000 U.S. Census. This dataset is a part of the 2010 ESRI Data Maps collection.
Purpose
United States Census Tracts provides boundaries and demographic information for the U.S. Census tracts. The boundaries are consistent with the county, state, and block group data sets.
Supplemental Information
Largest scale when displaying the data: 1:50,000. This dataset comes with two ESRI layer files symbolizing the features.

Data Quality Information
Logical Consistency Report
The shapefile is converted to SDC (Smart Data Compression) format using either tools in ArcGIS or ESRI SDC Data Development Kit Professional 2 (DDKP2). The SDC data set is then imported into a file geodatabase to verify and validate the geometry.
Completeness Report
After processing, the data set is checked for drawing display and number of records and file sizes compared with source materials.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report
Horizontal positional accuracy is dependent on geographic area. In most areas, accuracy is between 5 and 25 meters (16 and 82 feet). In some areas, accuracy is off by up to several tens of meters (100 feet or more). In the poorest areas, accuracy is off by up to 100 meters (328 feet).

Entity Type Definition
The polygons represent the U.S. Census tracts within the United States. Tract - a small, relatively permanent statistical subdivision of a county or statistically equivalent entity, delineated for data presentation purposes by a local group of census data users or the geographic staff of a regional census center in accordance with Census Bureau guidelines. Designed to be relatively homogeneous units with respect to population characteristics, economic status, and living conditions at the time they are established, census tracts generally contain between 1,000 and 8,000 people, with an optimum size of 4,000 people. Census tract boundaries are delineated with the intention of being stable over many decades, so they generally follow relatively permanent visible features. However, they may follow governmental unit boundaries and other invisible features in some instances; the boundary of a state or county (or statistically equivalent entity) is always a census tract boundary.
