- Abstract
- United States Core Based Statistical Areas is a polygon theme representing geographic entities, defined by the United States Office of Management and Budget for use by Federal statistical agencies, based on the concept of a core area with a large population nucleus, plus adjacent communities having a high degree of economic and social integration with that core. A Core-Based Statistical Area (CBSA) consists of a U.S. county or counties or equivalent entities associated with at least one core (urbanized area or urban cluster) with a population of at least 10,000 along with any adjacent counties having a high degree of social and economic integration with the core as measured through commuting ties with the counties containing the core. CBSAs are categorized as being either Metropolitan or Micropolitan. Each Metropolitan Statistical Area must have at least one urbanized area of 50,000 or more inhabitants. Each Micropolitan Statistical Area must have at least one urban cluster with a population of at least 10,000 but less than 50,000.
- Purpose
- U.S. Core Based Statistical Areas provides the names, types, and demographic information for the core-based statistical areas of the United States.

- Data Quality Information
- Logical Consistency Report
- The shapefile is converted to SDC (Smart Data Compression) format using tools in ArcGIS. The SDC data set is then imported into a file geodatabase to verify, validate, and if needed repair the geometry.
- Completeness Report
- After processing, the data set is checked for drawing display and number of records and file sizes compared with source materials.
- Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report
- The positional accuracy of TIGER/Line varies with the source materials used. In areas where the Census Bureau has not realigned street features as part of MTAIP it meets, at best, the established National Map Accuracy standards (approximately +/-50 meters or 167 feet) where 1:100,000-scale maps from the USGS were the source. The Census Bureau cannot specify the accuracy of feature changes added by its field staff or local updates or of features derived from the GBF/DIME-Files or other sources. Thus, the level of positional accuracy in the TIGER/Line shapefiles may not be suitable for high-precision measurement applications such as engineering problems, property transfers, or other uses that might require highly accurate measurements of the earth's surface.
