All the maps contain rich information about the past and represent a sampling of time periods, scales, and cartographic art, resulting in visual history stories that only old maps can tell. Each map has been georeferenced by Rumsey, thus creating unique digital map images that allow the old maps to appear in their correct places on the modern globe. Some of the maps fit perfectly in their modern spaces, while othersgenerally earlier period mapsreveal interesting geographical misconceptions of their time. Cultural features on the maps can be compared to the modern satellite views using the slider bars to adjust transparency. The result is an exploration of time as well as space, a marriage of historic cartographic masterpieces with innovative contemporary software tools.</note> <subject authority="geonames"> <geographic authority="geonames" authorityURI="http://www.geonames.org/ontology#">Congo (Democratic Republic)</geographic> </subject> <subject authority="geonames"> <geographic authority="geonames" authorityURI="http://www.geonames.org/ontology#" valueURI="http://sws.geonames.org/6255146/">Africa</geographic> </subject> <subject authority="lcsh"> <topic authority="lcsh" authorityURI="http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects.html">Historical geography</topic> </subject> <subject authority="lcsh"> <topic authority="lcsh" authorityURI="http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects.html">Atlas map</topic> </subject> <subject authority="lcsh"> <topic authority="lcsh" authorityURI="http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects.html">Administrative and political divisions</topic> </subject> <subject authority="ISO19115TopicCategory"> <topic authority="ISO19115TopicCategory" authorityURI="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_TopicCategoryCode">Imagery and Base Maps</topic> </subject> <subject> <temporal encoding="w3cdtf">1708</temporal> </subject> <subject> <cartographics> <projection>Sinusoidal</projection> <coordinates>W 7°57ʹ6ʺ--E 70°13ʹ8ʺ/N 5°14ʹ34ʺ--S 37°51ʹ30ʺ</coordinates> </cartographics> </subject> <originInfo> <dateIssued encoding="w3cdtf" keyDate="yes">2015</dateIssued> <publisher>Cartography Associates</publisher> </originInfo> <location> <url usage="primary display">https://purl.stanford.edu/ht529cs6212</url> </location> <note type="contact" displayLabel="Contact">brannerlibrary@stanford.edu</note> <recordInfo> <languageOfCataloging> <languageTerm authority="iso639-2b" type="code">eng</languageTerm> </languageOfCataloging> <recordContentSource>Stanford</recordContentSource> <recordCreationDate encoding="w3cdtf">2018-01-26</recordCreationDate> <recordIdentifier>edu.stanford.purl:ht529cs6212</recordIdentifier> </recordInfo> <relatedItem type="otherFormat" displayLabel="Scanned map"> <titleInfo> <title>Carte du Congo et du Pays des Cafres.
