This is a georeferenced dataset of contemporary Chinese Buddhist sites based on a Chinese directory published in 2006. The source data is based on Gui Weibing 桂未冰 (ed.), Zhongguo Fojiao siyuan minglu 2006 中国佛教寺院名录 (2006). Hong Kong: Zhonghua fojiao chubanshe, 2006. Coordinates were determined by the research team led by Prof. Ge Jianxiong 葛剑雄at Fudan University in 2008. (Note: coordinates were not obtained from Google sources).Version 1.1 updates previous version 1.0 which was edited and prepared by Jiang Wu in 2010. This new version corrects mistakes and typos in the previous version with the help of Ouyang Nan.
BGIS stands for Buddhism Geographical Information System, a project led by Jiang Wu from The University of Arizona’s Department of East Asian Studies. Funding for the preparation of this dataset has been provided by the Henry Luce Foundation through a grant to Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiatives (ECAI) at University of California, Berkeley.This datasets is made available to interested persons through the University of Arizona's instance of Open Geoportal. It has been provided to assist educators, students, researchers, and policy makers in mapping and/or analysis applications.
